Discrimination in America: African American Experiences
White and Asian women have narrowed the wage gap with white men to a much greater degree than black blacck Hispanic women. Studies of the wage gap for various minority races in the United States have revealed a number of factors that contribute to the differences in wages observed between white Americans and Americans of other races. By comparison, black women only narrowed that gap by 9 cents, from earning 56 cents for every dollar earned by a s man in to 65 cents today. The thinking ascendant on the left blames both present-day discrimination and the long history of racist public policies, such as redlining, an official practice that made it harder for blacks to get mortgages, and so permanently disrupted the transmission of wealth between generations. Boack workers’ median wage was about percent that of white workers. The discrepancies are caused mney low incomes and by debt. Various solutions to eliminate the racial wage gap have been proposed. One vulnerability is that the policy has a built-in lag time of 18 years and benefits a constituency that cannot vote or hire lobbyists.
